A faded van stall at a medical office is not a small cosmetic miss. The accessible route has to reach the entrance patients actually use, not the staff door around back. Atlas counts stalls, checks aisle widths (60 inches standard, 96 inches van), and matches signs to the paint.
Wake Forest–area medical offices, downtown commercial buildings, and HOA lots near Old Salem age differently. Medical visitor lots turn over all day. Downtown parcels are tight, so a restripe that 'saves' a stall by shrinking an aisle fails the table even if the count looks right. HOA boards sometimes inherit layouts from the original builder. ADA is federal; a covenant cannot waive the count. The Winston-Salem fire official can still add fire-lane rules on top.
The table has not been replaced
2010 is the name of the current federal design standard, not an expired year. The Department of Justice still uses the 2010 ADA Standards when a lot is restriped. North Carolina's 2024 State Building Code Chapter 11 Table 1106.2 lists the same accessible-space counts. Later ADA rules about websites do not change stall counts or aisle widths. Use the ADA parking-space calculator for a planning number, then we confirm it on the ground.
- Standard accessible aisle: 60 inches.
- Van-accessible aisle: 96 inches (or an 11-foot stall with a 60-inch aisle).
- At least 1 in every 6 accessible spaces must be van-accessible.
- Signs match the paint and sit at least 60 inches above grade.
- The accessible route to the entrance is part of compliance — paint alone is not enough.
How Atlas works a Winston-Salem lot
General lots use the §208.2 table. Hospital outpatient uses 10% of patient/visitor spaces. Rehab / outpatient physical therapy uses 20%. We calculate from the stalls on the ground, not the old as-built.
Medical offices often want weekends or early mornings. Downtown buildings prefer overnight. HOA lots can usually be phased so residents keep a wing.
